Alternative Secondary

Career Center
The Monmouth County Career Center, a New Jersey Star School, is a vocational high school on Kozloski Road in Freehold, New Jersey. We have provided career development services to special needs students for twenty-three years. As we approach our 24th year, our school's specialization remains to provide special needs students with career training while they remain enrolled in their home districts for selected academics, sports, and student activities, the school's role is to provide an environment that exposes students to occupational information, challenges abilities, facilitates decision-making, and is responsive to individual student career needs. The curriculum includes pre-vocational evaluation, career exploration, skills training, cooperative education, and school-to-career services. It is structured on an individual basis and allows students to participate in a sequence of programs to acquire occupational skills necessary for employment.

Student enterprises are a program hallmark. The school's common area houses a number of stores providing actual services. These stores dovetail with the working shops; they include a flower ship, greenhouse, restaurant, bakery, school store, and supermarket. This real-life simulation takes training one step closer to the world of work and students reap many benefits of this training.

In addition to vocational training, the students at the Career Center are actively involved in career related organizations such as DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), FFA (Future Farmers of America), HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), and VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).

KIVA High School
KIVA High School provides a comprehensive program for special needs students, in grades 9-12, who have not experienced success in a traditional high school setting. Using reality-based, small group instruction, KIVA provides academic requirements for graduation, vocational training for job placement and interpersonal skill development for successful world citizenship. During the 2005-06 school year, KIVA was able to service over seventy-five students who were recommended by more than twenty-five high schools. A "kiva" in the Native American tradition, is a safe, protected community in which knowledge is exchanged in an atmosphere of trust and respect. Based on this philosophy, KIVA students have made a positive difference in both school and in the community through the following activities:

KIVA Community Service
