NetGenEd 2012 - Sites to Join

Primary Flat Classroom Project Wiki

IMPORTANT NOTE:Your user name on BOTH wikis must adhere to the following format: firstname_last_initial_aahs. So my user name would be: brianm_aahs

This means that if you have a wikispaces account, you'll need to edit the user name to follow this format or create a new account.

Before you can join the project wiki, you must join and be approved for our Primary Flat Classroom wiki. After you join and are approved here, you will have to take the second step to join the project wiki.
NetGenEd 2012 Wiki
This is the project wiki that all students and teachers must join.
PLEASE NOTE: AS OF FEBRUARY 24, 2012, THE NEW VERSION OF THIS WIKI IS NOT POSTED! If it says anything about being an archived project - don't join! I'll post an update when the new site is available.

START HERE:
NetGenEd Ning

1) Students must use the same naming pattern for the ning: firstname_last_initial_aahs
2) Please accurately identify where you're from.
3) I've created a group for our school - join the group (AAHS NetGenEd 2012).

Direct Group Link: AAHS NetGenEd 2012

4) This group is for ALL PROJECT MEMBERS:NetGenEd Ning 2012 Group
5) This site is PUBLICLY viewable, however you have to be approved to join, so please be patient because we check everyone's profiles and will not approve you unless you are appropriately set up.
6) Only post appropriate content.

Beginning Research for our World-Wide Project

The project that we will be working on is called NetGenEd, as we said it's based on the 2012 Horizon Report and a book by Don Tapscott called Growing Up Digital (and the followup Grown Up Digital).

View the following 3 videos to begin to get an idea about Don Tapscott's principles:

Wikispaces & Screenshots: Perfect Together

"Wiki Wiki Express" sign at Honolulu

There are some great resources referenced in this post.

Wikispaces is a great site for creating wikis to collaborate with classmates for a variety of reasons.

I created this wiki: http://macscreenshots.wikispaces.com/ to demonstrate the use of screenshots AND to show how to incorporate screenshots in a wiki AND to link to more learning opportunities about screenshots AND to demonstrate the creation & use of a wiki.

A picture from a screen can help to clarify what words alone may not be able to do.

It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, if that is so then a moving picture must be worth even more! With that in mind, here is another great resource:

Screenr allows you to use a browser on any platform and easily record what's happening on the screen. The result can then be tweeted or easily posted to your blog or even included in a wiki!!

Here is the screenr 1 minute tour:

Note: Screenr is not the only such utility available in the world - Explore and feel free to find and share others!

Task: Work with your teaching group to create a protected wikispace on your topic. One member of your group must create the space and then invite the other members to join. Also, make sure to invite me!

Your topic wikispace should include descriptions of your topic as well as screenshots and embedded videos created by you and/or found on the topic sites or YouTube.

The resulting wiki should be a useful resource to anyone needing to learn more about your topic!

All of this work should be done with each team member sitting at their assigned computer and communicating through the wiki or some non-verbal method!

Lab Use Guidelines

Lab Work Guidelines: We discussed some important issues. When lab time is provided in class it is important that work gets done. Some conversation is acceptable, but is not the focus of lab time. Each student is responsible for their own work, don't ask others for details on assignments; look on your assignment sheet and make your own decisions (even your own mistakes!).

Lab Music: Each student may listen to a personal music device or use earphones on the computer at a volume which allows you to hear announcements made by the instructor. I will play a few different types of music on the teacher computer. (Alternating days, something like classic rock on day 1, modern popular stuff on day 2 using some Pandora stations.) Also, students may bring in music CDs to be played on the main classroom computer, suggest some Pandora adjustments or even post playlists on their blogs for use some of the time. Students may not play music at each station at a volume that others can hear.

If anyone has an iHome type device (iPod audio speakers) that they would like to donate for use, we could share music through iPods.

Notes About Blogging on the Room 110 Blog

Inverted question mark; originally by Neutrali...

Image via Wikipedia

Note 1: When you type in a blog entry it will not 'show up' immediately! I need to receive notification that you've requested publishing, then I need to read the entry AND finally I need to approve the entry. Sometimes, if you request publishing late at night or over the weekend, it might take a while until I approve it.

Note 2: NOTHING can be published (I won't be notified!), if you don't check the Request Publishing checkbox AND click 'Save'.
I've included some clips from a mystery student blogger below to illustrate some issues. Login and click on 'Articles' to see these views.

This box must be checked.

Note 3: In the clip above, pay attention to the column labeled Pub; this will tell you the status of your articles. If an asterisk (*) is showing, your article has been published. If it is blank, you have not requested publishing!! If has a question mark (?), you have requested publishing and it is awaiting approval.  Sometimes, if an entry has had the '?' for a few days, there may be other issues:

In this clip from the mystery blogger, there are some notes in RED at the bottom of the entry. These notes are from me and they indicate things that must be done before publishing will be approved. These comments are only visible when editing in the text edit mode!

In an attempt to make life easier for Computer Applications students and their teacher, this blog will be used to disseminate course information, updates to assignments and announcements of interest. Take a look at some of the movies and photos that have been posted over the past year(s) in other blog entries.

Please feel free to share feedback with Mr M
