We will be reading short stories, essays, and poems by African and African-American authors.  The students will not be getting homework, but they will be asked to do 100% of the work in order to pass the class.  The students will learn about the recurring themes, characterizations, settings and ironies in this literature.  They will also learn vocabulary and answer comprehension questions based on the selections.  In addition, the students will write essays and answer open-ended questions, which will be on the HSPA.   For those students who have already passed the HSPA, there will be alternative, independent assignments.

Welcome to English class.
