4/20/2020 – The Monmouth County Vocational School District is sad to announce the passing of Board of Education President Clement V. Sommers. Mr. Sommers passed away from natural causes on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at 91 years old.
Mr. Sommers’s life exemplifies the very best in what it means to be a “public servant”. He was a Councilman and Mayor in his hometown of Oceanport as well as a Monmouth County Freeholder.
Mr. Sommers served as a member of the Board of Education for over 40 years. It was during his tenure on the Board that Monmouth County Vocational Schools expanded from a shared-time vocational school district into one of the best school districts in the nation with several full-time programs; the Marine Academy of Science and Technology, High Technology High School, the Academy of Allied Health and Science, Communications High School, Biotechnology High School, Class Academy, and the Academy of Law and Public Safety all began during his years of service.
Mr. Sommers was humble and never one to take personal credit for the success of the district. He always praised the administration, staff, students and parents for all of their contributions and efforts. Former, current and future graduates of Monmouth County Vocational School District will forever be indebted to Clement V. Sommers.
Mr. Sommers ended each and every conversation with a saying, and this expression is even more appropriate during these difficult days. So in honor of the life of Clem Sommers, we will all “keep smiling”.
