Course Descriptions

Networking I
This is the first semester of a four semester Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification program. CCNA certification is recognized by business and industry and offers excellent employment opportunities with career advancement potential. Semester one focuses on the networking fundamentals. Student learning will include an understanding of the open system interconnection (OSI) reference model, networking components, premise wiring, industry standards, topologies, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, subnet masking and network design. Project learning experiences will include designing networks and installation of network premise cabling.

Networking II
Semester two will emphasize the students' knowledge of router and switching technologies, beginning router and switching configurations, and network management. Basic router configurations will be emphasized using the routing information protocol (RIP). This includes, but is not limited to, configuring IP addresses, host names, telnet procedures, IP traces, ethernet port addresses, serial port addresses, router commands, router modes, troubleshooting, password recovery, and making physical connections at various ports.

Networking III
Semester three will emphasize the students' knowledge of advanced routing and switching technologies and network management. Student learning will include an understanding of virtual lans, data link layer network design, simple network management protocol, interior gateway routing protocol, enhanced interior gateway routing protocol, classless IP, and wide area networking.

Networking IV
Semester four will emphasize project based experimental activities and final preparation for the CCNA certification exam. Students will synthesize knowledge from the previous three semesters to create various types of networks for different situations. Trends and new developments in the field of networking will also be examined.
